Bachem seeks a PI Data Historian & Integration System Engineer in Stein AG to manage AVEVA PI systems and lead IT/OT integration for new manufacturing sites.
This position is a key component of Bachem’s strategy to expand production capacity at a new facility in Sisslerfeld by the end of the decade. The role provides the opportunity to help shape the future organization during the project design phase while strengthening the Global IT team. The engineer will support greenfield and brownfield projects, ensuring seamless data flow between automation and business systems.
Responsibilities
- Oversee the complete lifecycle of the AVEVA PI Data Historian, covering architecture, deployment, maintenance, upgrades, and decommissioning.
- Lead system implementation and commissioning during new manufacturing site start-ups, ensuring operational readiness.
- Administer the 24/7 PI System to guarantee high availability, performance, and disaster recovery capabilities.
- Design and optimize historian solutions that connect OT equipment (PLCs, SCADA, DCS, MES) with enterprise IT platforms.
- Drive end-to-end IT/OT integration to enable smooth data exchange between manufacturing equipment and business applications.
- Collaborate with automation, infrastructure, cybersecurity, and manufacturing teams to ensure compliant and scalable integrations.
- Manage change, incident, and problem resolution processes in coordination with stakeholders, vendors, and users.
- Troubleshoot complex issues related to industrial data collection, interfaces, storage, and synchronization.
- Translate operational needs into technical solutions that align with digital transformation goals.
- Configure PI tags, Asset Framework structures, event frames, and data models to meet specific business requirements.
- Develop custom interfaces, connectors, and scripts to improve interoperability between OT and IT systems.
- Support qualification activities for connected manufacturing systems and ensure adherence to GMP and validation standards.
- Analyze system performance and lead continuous improvement initiatives for historian and integration platforms.
- Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership to project teams.
- Coordinate with external vendors, system integrators, and engineering partners during project execution.
- Create and maintain GMP-compliant documentation, including design specs, test protocols, SOPs, and validation records.
- Serve as a Subject Matter Expert during audits and inspections to ensure compliance with regulatory and data integrity standards.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in software engineering, Computer Science, IT, Automation Engineering, or a related field.
- 4 to 6 years of experience in PI Historian engineering, system integration, and project delivery within pharmaceutical manufacturing.
- Hands-on expertise with the AVEVA PI Data Historian System, including PI Server, PI AF, PI Vision, Interfaces, Connectors, and Adaptors.
- Proven track record supporting new manufacturing site deployments, commissioning, or large-scale expansion projects.
- Experience integrating OT equipment and industrial automation systems with enterprise IT infrastructure.
- Solid knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as OPC DA/UA, Modbus, MQTT, BACnet, or Ethernet/IP.
- Background in managing production-critical applications in regulated manufacturing environments.
- Familiarity with PLCs, SCADA, DCS, MES, and manufacturing execution platform architectures.
- Understanding of infrastructure technologies including Windows Server, virtualization, networking, Active Directory, backup/recovery, and cybersecurity.
- Experience with Computerized System Validation (CSV), GMP compliance, and data integrity requirements.
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and communication skills, with the ability to bridge IT and OT domains.
- In-depth knowledge of industrial data integration, historian architecture, and real-time data management.
- Understanding of manufacturing processes, automation systems, and digital manufacturing initiatives.
- Proficiency in scripting and automation tools like PowerShell or Python for system administration.
- Experience with data contextualization, visualization, reporting, and analytics platforms.
- Ability to work effectively in cross-functional and global project environments.
- Fluent proficiency in English.
