Postdoc Position in Medical Robotics and Image-Guided Tumour Targeting

Universität Bern · Bern

The University of Bern seeks a Postdoc to develop a robotic platform for image-guided tumor targeting, combining medical robotics, real-time imaging, and therapeutic ultrasound at the ARTORG Center.

Based at the ARTORG Center for Biomedical Engineering Research, this position focuses on leading the creation and integration of a robotic treatment system. The role merges medical robotics, real-time imaging, therapeutic ultrasound, and closed-loop control to ensure precise and reproducible tumor targeting.

Responsibilities

  • Positioning ultrasound transducers using robotic systems
  • Providing guidance through multimodal imaging techniques
  • Performing system calibration and image-to-robot registration
  • Developing treatment plans and generating movement trajectories
  • Implementing closed-loop control mechanisms
  • Validating the system using tissue-mimicking phantoms and ex vivo tissue samples
  • Evaluating performance in preclinical models relevant to clinical practice

Requirements

  • PhD in Robotics, Mechanical, Electrical, or Biomedical Engineering, Mechatronics, Control Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related discipline
  • Proven hands-on experience in building and operating robotic experimental setups
  • Strong programming and analytical capabilities
  • Ability to independently develop and troubleshoot integrated hardware-software platforms
  • Excellent written and spoken English proficiency
  • Experience in areas such as robotic-arm programming, robot kinematics, calibration, coordinate transformations, image-guided control, visual servoing, autonomous scanning, trajectory generation, motion planning, closed-loop control, ROS or ROS 2, Python, C++, MATLAB/Simulink, computer vision, image registration, segmentation, target tracking, integration of cameras, imaging systems, sensors, and actuators, rapid prototyping, CAD, 3D printing, fixtures, instrumentation, and experimental validation of robotic or medical systems

Nice to have

  • Background in medical robotics or image-guided interventions
  • Experience with robot-assisted ultrasound imaging
  • Knowledge of therapeutic ultrasound or HIFU
  • Familiarity with endoscopic imaging
  • Experience in medical-device development
  • Prior work with biological tissue or animal models
  • Skills in machine learning for image segmentation or robotic control
  • Previous expertise in ultrasound technologies

What the company offers

  • Access to strong research infrastructure and an international network
  • Training and support in ultrasound physics, acoustic calibration, and therapeutic-ultrasound operation provided by the ARSL team
