The Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) in Villigen, Switzerland, is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow in Atmospheric Science to lead research on non-CO2 aircraft engine emissions. The role involves operating advanced mass spectrometry equipment and conducting collaborative experiments.

This position centers on investigating non-CO2 emissions from aircraft engines, covering both large and smaller unregulated units. The successful candidate will lead experimental campaigns and utilize specialized instrumentation to characterize exhaust components and assess secondary organic aerosol formation.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and coordinate experimental campaigns at an aircraft test bench and airport sites.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain an online mass spectrometer with extractive electrospray ionization to measure aerosol components and quantify oil emissions.
  • Analyze volatile aircraft exhaust components using a proton-transfer-reaction mass spectrometer.
  • Investigate the formation potential and composition of secondary organic aerosol using an extractive electrospray mass spectrometer coupled with an oxidative flow reactor.
  • Ensure the proper functioning of aerosol mass spectrometry equipment during measurement campaigns.
  • Execute collaborative experiments with domestic and international research partners.

Requirements

  • A PhD in Physical Chemistry, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, or a closely related discipline.
  • Demonstrated ability to generate data under supervision, alongside strong skills in critical analysis, evaluation, and synthesis of complex concepts.
  • Solid background in mass spectrometry and atmospheric chemistry.
  • Proficiency in communicating research findings effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal abilities and a collaborative team mindset.
  • Fluent written and spoken English.
