The Paul Scherrer Institute seeks a Postdoctoral Fellow in Atmospheric Science to lead aircraft emission campaigns and operate advanced mass spectrometry instruments in Villigen PSI, CH.

This position supports the institute’s broader mission to address climate challenges by investigating non-CO2 emissions from aviation. The successful candidate will lead experimental campaigns at airport and test bench facilities, focusing on characterizing aerosol components and volatile exhaust constituents to better understand secondary organic aerosol formation.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and manage experimental campaigns conducted at airport sites and aircraft test benches.
  • Operate, calibrate, and characterize online mass spectrometers to quantify oil-based emissions and aerosol components.
  • Analyze volatile aircraft exhaust components using proton-transfer-reaction mass spectrometry techniques.
  • Investigate the formation potential and chemical composition of secondary organic aerosols.
  • Maintain aerosol mass spectrometry equipment and oversee instrumentation performance during field campaigns.
  • Execute collaborative research projects with internal teams and international partners.

Requirements

  • Hold a PhD in Physical Chemistry, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, or a closely related discipline.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in mass spectrometry and atmospheric chemistry.
  • Exhibit strong critical analysis skills, including the ability to evaluate and synthesize complex scientific ideas.
  • Show capability to generate data under supervision and communicate research findings effectively.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal abilities and work well within a team environment.
  • Have good written and spoken English proficiency.
