The Paul Scherrer Institut and ETH Zurich seek a Professor of Solid-State Materials to lead the LMX laboratory, conduct advanced research, and teach at both institutions.

This joint professorship between ETH Zurich and the Paul Scherrer Institut centers on directing the Laboratory for Multiscale materials eXperiments (LMX) within the Center for Nanotechnology and Materials Science. The position combines the oversight of a major research facility with academic duties, requiring the incumbent to guide a large team while delivering instruction to students at undergraduate and graduate levels.

Responsibilities

  • Direct the operations and strategic vision of the Laboratory for Multiscale materials eXperiments (LMX).
  • Establish and maintain a globally competitive research agenda focused on solid-state materials.
  • Mentor current research staff and provide leadership to existing groups within the LMX framework.
  • Manage and utilize advanced synthesis infrastructure located in the Quantum Materials and Materials Discovery Center.
  • Execute investigations into materials discovery, structural analysis, electronic and quantum phenomena, and two-dimensional materials.
  • Generate high-purity single-crystal samples through diverse synthetic methodologies.
  • Apply analytical techniques including X-ray diffraction, scattering methods, NMR, and neutron or muon spin spectroscopy.
  • Deliver educational content and supervision for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Requirements

  • Possess a doctoral degree or equivalent qualification in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a closely related discipline.
  • Exhibit a documented history of effective leadership, including experience managing substantial research units or large teams.
  • Demonstrate a clear and strong dedication to pedagogical excellence and student development.
  • Provide evidence of an outstanding international portfolio of research achievements.

Nice to have

  • Experience designing research initiatives that create synergies with PSI infrastructure and the European Spallation Source.
