Scandit, based in Zürich, is hiring a Senior Computer Vision Engineer to lead the development of a new retail technology using computer vision to improve operational insights and automation. The role involves building production-grade vision systems from concept to deployment in a hybrid work environment.
The Senior Computer Vision Engineer will lead the creation of a new generation of retail technology, using computer vision to deliver actionable insights and automation. This role bridges advanced research with real-world product needs, requiring technical leadership to take the system from 0 to 1 and deliver robust, production-ready solutions under uncertainty.
Responsibilities
- Plan and prioritize technical experiments to assess key risks such as model precision, recall, and latency in retail store environments
- Design and implement full computer vision and machine learning pipelines using real-world video data, covering data ingestion, preprocessing, training, evaluation, and deployment
- Develop and improve workflows for human annotation to generate high-quality training and test datasets from video streams
- Work with product managers and engineering leaders to define requirements, set milestones, and convert business goals into technical plans
- Choose, adapt, and optimize advanced computer vision models for detecting suspicious behavior and actions in uncontrolled retail settings
- Provide technical leadership in video-based computer vision, guiding best practices and contributing to team growth and hiring
Requirements
- A university degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or a related technical field
- Extensive hands-on experience in computer vision and machine learning, including designing, training, evaluating, and deploying models in production
- Demonstrated success in building end-to-end CV/ML systems from concept to commercial product
- Strong expertise in video-based pipelines and human action or behavior recognition, particularly in retail or autonomous checkout contexts
- Solid software engineering skills with Python and modern ML/CV frameworks, and experience handling real-world, noisy data
- Ability to thrive in fast-paced, uncertain environments, prioritize experiments, and rapidly iterate on technical solutions
- Effective collaboration with cross-functional teams (product, backend, data, operations) and clear communication of technical topics in English (B2 or higher)
- Eligible to work in the hiring location
Nice to have
- Experience with privacy-aware or GDPR-compliant data pipelines, especially for video data
- Background in developing or selecting annotation tools and workflows for computer vision training data
- Previous experience in retail or autonomous store environments using computer vision
