Senior Electronics Engineer (Motor Control & Power Electronics)

Amazon RIVR · Zürich

Amazon RIVR seeks a Senior Electronics Engineer in Zürich to design motor control and power electronics for its robotics team, focusing on BLDC drivers and embedded systems.

This position is based within the Zurich R&D division of Amazon RIVR, a robotics firm developing Physical AI for doorstep delivery. The engineer will serve as the primary architect for the robot's actuation systems, bridging the gap between physical mechanics and firmware logic to create the 'muscles' of the machines.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop custom BLDC drivers that maximize torque and efficiency while maintaining a compact form factor for robotic joints.
  • Manage the full circuit design and PCB layout process for digital and power electronics, ensuring strict adherence to performance, reliability, and EMC/EMS standards.
  • Take ownership of the ideation, implementation, and validation of safety-critical design components.
  • Construct and test prototypes to verify functionality and ensure designs are ready for scalable production.
  • Develop and fine-tune motor control algorithms, including FOC, cogging compensation, and friction compensation, to support diverse operational tasks.
  • Partner with mechanical and software engineers to integrate hardware seamlessly into the broader Physical AI ecosystem.
  • Guide the hardware roadmap and mentor electronics team members to uphold high engineering standards.

Requirements

  • Master’s or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, or Robotics.
  • At least five years of hardware R&D experience, with specialized expertise in motor drives or power electronics.
  • Proficiency in Altium or KiCad, demonstrating the ability to design for high power density.
  • Deep knowledge of BLDC/PMSM motor dynamics and real-time embedded C/C++ programming, particularly on STM32 or similar platforms.
  • Skilled in using electronics instrumentation such as oscilloscopes and power analyzers for detailed debugging and optimization.
  • Experience managing OEM/ODM relationships and understanding the transition from prototype to mass production.

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with GaN or SiC semiconductors to enhance efficiency and miniaturization.
  • Proven experience in designing for mass production (DFM/DFT) within robotic, automotive, or aerospace industries.
  • Background in safety-critical hardware design, such as ISO 26262 or IEC 61508, for mobile machinery.
  • Experience building or managing specialized hardware teams or coordinating complex international R&D workflows.
