Siteimprove GmbH seeks a Senior Engineering Manager to lead a distributed team of seven engineers, driving the strategic shift from traditional SEO to Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) within their search insights division.
This position is responsible for guiding a distributed engineering group focused on SEO and AEO capabilities. The manager will oversee the technical evolution of these systems, ensuring the team successfully transitions from standard search optimization practices to advanced answer engine strategies while maintaining high delivery standards.
Responsibilities
- Deliver hands-on technical direction and architectural guidance for the Search Insights group.
- Manage the complete product lifecycle, ensuring projects move smoothly from initial concept through to final launch.
- Guide, coach, and grow a team of approximately seven engineers, comprising both permanent staff and long-term contractors.
- Collaborate with Product Management to define and execute the product roadmap and achieve delivery goals.
- Work closely with internal product groups across the Search Pillar, other platform areas, data science, AI teams, and go-to-market functions.
- Update current codebases and integrate technologies acquired through recent acquisitions.
- Use data analytics to prioritize feature development that improves customer ability to track indexability, site structure, content visibility, and search results.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, or a closely related discipline.
- At least eight years of software engineering background, including five years in engineering management roles.
- Solid experience designing and implementing microservices and service-oriented architectures.
- Ability to provide technical leadership and architectural oversight, with willingness to engage in hands-on coding when necessary.
- Proven track record of recruiting, developing, and managing performance within distributed engineering teams.
- History of partnering with Product Management to own roadmaps and deliver results that benefit customers.
- Strong analytical capabilities, using data to inform both technical and business choices.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills, capable of working effectively across cross-functional teams and different time zones.
- Experience delivering software solutions in enterprise SaaS or B2B contexts.
Nice to have
- Familiarity with .NET, TypeScript, React, and AWS cloud infrastructure.
- Deep knowledge of SEO principles, search engine algorithms, and search performance optimization.
- Experience managing teams in search technology, SEO platforms, or marketing SaaS products.
- Background in technical modernization efforts, legacy system migration, or platform consolidation.
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform, CloudFormation, or AWS CDK.
- Understanding of AI/ML applications in search ranking, answer engine optimization, or content discovery.
- Experience managing mixed teams of full-time employees and contractors.
- Proficient with software development tools and platforms (e.g., Jira, AWS).
- Strong understanding of modern software architecture patterns, particularly microservices and service-oriented design.
- Experience with cloud infrastructure and DevOps practices.
