Senior Observability Platform Engineer (80-100%)

Open Systems AG seeks a Senior Observability Platform Engineer in Zürich to manage scalable telemetry infrastructure and drive best-practices across engineering teams.

This position focuses on maintaining the reliability and efficiency of core observability systems that support both internal engineering groups and a customer-facing portal. The role also involves advancing these systems and promoting observability standards throughout the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and improve observability frameworks such as Clickhouse, Thanos, Loki, Tempo, and the OpenTelemetry Collector, including custom processors.
  • Drive the adoption of observability best practices across the company to ensure thorough monitoring, logging, and tracing.
  • Build and maintain automated tools for monitoring, alerting, and incident response.
  • Work closely with engineering teams to deliver scalable solutions tailored to their needs using the observability platform.
  • Ensure high availability and optimize system performance through proactive maintenance and monitoring.
  • Create strategies for cost optimization, capacity planning, and performance tuning.
  • Keep abreast of industry trends and technologies to foster continuous improvement.
  • Test and integrate new tools, particularly in observability and telemetry, to expand platform capabilities.
  • Assess and incorporate the OpenTelemetry Collector to improve telemetry data collection and analysis.

Requirements

  • Proven experience managing at least one observability stack (Thanos, Mimir, Cortex, Tempo, Loki, or Clickhouse), including configuration and optimization.
  • Strong understanding of Kubernetes architecture and hands-on experience managing cluster resources.
  • Experience writing and maintaining Helm charts, and deploying Kubernetes resources efficiently.
  • Familiarity with continuous delivery and GitOps practices, including version control and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Hands-on experience using agentic AI tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Cursor) to enhance daily engineering tasks.
  • Expertise in containerization, orchestration, and optimizing Docker workloads.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in platform engineering, site reliability engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience managing large-scale infrastructures and observability platforms (e.g., Thanos, Mimir, Cortex, Tempo, Loki, Clickhouse).
  • Excitement about managing over 20 TB of daily telemetry data from 10,000+ nodes (Linux hosts, Kubernetes clusters, VMs).

Nice to have

  • Coding proficiency in Golang or a similar language.
  • Contributions to open-source projects written in Golang or similar languages.
  • Knowledge of the OpenTelemetry Collector or contributions to the project.
  • Interest in applying AI/ML to observability, such as anomaly detection, automated root-cause analysis, alert noise reduction, and natural-language querying.
