Senior Software Engineer / Principal Software Engineer - Automation Core (Lab Automation)

Roche seeks a Principal Software Engineer to lead the architecture and delivery of core automation control and data frameworks for lab automation within its Computational Sciences Center of Excellence.

This position sits within the Data and Digital Catalyst organization of the Computational Sciences Center of Excellence. The engineer joins the Automation Core team to modernize computational ecosystems and build reliable, interconnected systems that empower scientists. By owning significant features and driving the technical roadmap, the role ensures scalable integration solutions that align with the strategic needs of drug discovery operations.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and implement robust, cross-vendor frameworks to integrate automated systems and workcells in laboratory environments.
  • Partner with end-users and product managers to translate complex operational needs into rapid, effective technical solutions.
  • Apply industry best practices for distributed systems and data engineering across the full technology stack.
  • Serve as a key technical contributor by owning major framework components and providing guidance to the wider team.
  • Define and drive the technical roadmap for core automation control and data frameworks, ensuring alignment with drug discovery goals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, plus at least four years of experience as a backend, data, or product engineer.
  • Expert-level coding skills in Python and/or Java.
  • Strong background in cloud-native architectures, preferably on AWS, and distributed systems design.
  • Seven or more years of progressive software architecture experience within the biotech or pharmaceutical sectors.
  • Hands-on familiarity with lab workflows, integrated workcells, and automation control systems such as liquid handlers and robotic arms.

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with emerging trends like AI-assisted coding and front-end development using TypeScript or JavaScript.
