Sr Specialist Scientific Data Engineering

Nestlé Research seeks a Senior Specialist in Scientific Data Engineering to design and manage data pipelines and architectures for diverse scientific projects in Lausanne, Switzerland.

This position sits within the Computational Science Department of Nestlé Research's Strategic Research Operations. The role is responsible for supporting research initiatives across multiple scientific fields, including plant sciences, clinical research, and pet health and nutrition.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain complete scientific data pipelines for areas such as Bioinformatics, Clinical studies, or Omics.
  • Create and launch scalable data structures on local Linux servers or cloud environments.
  • Integrate external developers into projects and work closely with internal data experts.
  • Collaborate within cross-functional teams to set project goals and determine technical strategies.
  • Partner with other groups to enhance data quality, metadata handling, and the ease of finding data.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, or a related field with life sciences.
  • 7+ years of professional experience in designing and implementing data pipelines and architectures in a research or scientific context.
  • Proficiency in data modeling, ETL/ELT processes, and distributed data systems.
  • Proficiency in Python and SQL for data manipulation and pipeline development.
  • Solid experience with cloud platforms (e.g., Azure) and orchestration tools (e.g., Airflow, ADF).
  • Solid experience with data lake and data warehouse technologies (e.g., Snowflake, DBT).
  • Experience working with Linux and container technologies (e.g., Openshift, Docker, Podman).
  • Experience with development frameworks (e.g., Agile, DevOps, Git, CI/CD).
  • Experience with Bioinformatics or Clinical or Omics data pipelines.
  • Experience coding with AI assistance (e.g., GitHub copilot).
  • Awareness of agentic architecture frameworks.
  • Experience collaborating with external teams and driving project streams through others to deliver results.
  • Experience in mentoring and guiding junior internal resources.
  • Excellent problem-solving, strong communication, stakeholder management and knowledge sharing skills.
  • Fluent spoken and written English.
