Staff Software Engineer, Merchant Shopping, Local Inventory

Google seeks a Staff Software Engineer in Zürich to lead high-impact projects for its Commerce team, focusing on local inventory and merchant shopping experiences.

The Commerce team builds the shopping experiences used by over a billion users daily. This role involves providing technical leadership to shape the future of how consumers and retailers connect, ensuring the platform remains a central part of the global shopping journey.

Responsibilities

• Lead technical efforts on significant projects with broad impact.
• Take full ownership of software components and features, guiding them from initial concept through design, implementation, testing, and launch.
• Address challenges related to scaling systems to accommodate growing user bases.
• Foster a team environment built on respect, collaboration, and meticulous attention to detail.
• Collaborate closely with Technical Leads, Product Managers, and cross-functional teams across Commerce, Ads, and Geo divisions.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
• At least 8 years of programming experience in C++, Java, Python, Kotlin, or Go.
• Minimum of 5 years in testing and launching software products.
• 3+ years of experience in software design and architecture.
• Hands-on experience integrating generative AI tools or LLM interfaces into workflows.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
• 8 years of experience with data structures and algorithms.
• 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role leading project teams and setting technical direction.
• Experience with data collection for Search/Geo-related usecases.
• Experience with leadership: nudging of team culture; coaching; team motivation.
