International Committee of the Red Cross · schweiz
As the lead organization on weapon contamination within the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, we work to protect civilians and humanitarian workers from the dangers of landmines, explosive remnants of war (ERW) and chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) hazards.
We engage with communities to raise awareness of the risks posed by mines, ERW and CBRN hazards. Through tailored public information campaigns, we encourage safe practices that prevent accidents and protect lives.
We strengthen the ability of medical personnel to treat casualties from explosions, offering specialized training in explosive trauma care, from immediate first aid to the management of complex blast injuries.
We help identify, mark and isolate contaminated areas, promote the safe removal and disposal of hazards and establish temporary safety measures to restore access to essential services and livelihoods until full clearance is possible.
We provide expertise and operational support to National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, enabling them to implement long-term strategies to reduce the humanitarian impact of weapon contamination.
By reducing and removing the threat of weapon contamination, we save lives, restore access to farmland, schools and health facilities and enable communities to reclaim their land and rebuild their future with dignity and resilience.
