Critical Infrastructure Electrical Engineer, Field Engineering

Amazon Switzerland seeks a Critical Infrastructure Electrical Engineer in Zürich to oversee data center design, maintenance, and expansion projects in a hybrid role.

AWS Infrastructure Services is responsible for the global design, planning, and operation of its cloud infrastructure. This position plays a vital part in Amazon’s goal to remain the most customer-centric company by leading projects that fit out data centers to meet evolving customer demands during fleet expansion.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the entire lifecycle of AWS Data Centers, from initial design through site improvements and ongoing maintenance.
  • Review design documents and equipment submittals for new data center facilities in the assigned region.
  • Troubleshoot site or equipment failures, perform Root Cause Analysis (RCA), and document Corrective Actions (CA).
  • Provide ad-hoc training and support for operational issues, including reviews of complex operating procedures and critical equipment.
  • Lead conceptual designs for existing data center upgrades to enhance capacity, availability, efficiency, and sustainability.
  • Collaborate with internal teams such as operations, design engineering, server hardware, and safety to uphold standards.
  • Conduct engineering audits, including on-site visits, and produce reports with risk assessments and mitigation recommendations.
  • Serve as the resident engineer during new construction projects, supporting construction, commissioning, and turnover phases.

Requirements

  • Business-level proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Willingness to travel between data center sites and internationally when necessary.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or an equivalent qualification.
  • Experience in mission-critical facilities engineering, particularly in sectors like data centers, power generation, or oil & gas.

Nice to have

  • Skills in data analytics, querying, scripting, and handling large datasets.
  • Direct experience with the design, construction, operation, or maintenance of mission-critical facilities, especially data centers.
  • Background as a resident engineer, field design consultant, or owner’s engineer.
  • Knowledge of regional building codes and regulations.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and create construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents.
  • Experience taking design concepts from exploration through development to deployment or mass production.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical and/or electrical equipment and design related to data centers.
  • Experience with EPMS, SCADA, or BMS Controls systems (software and/or hardware).
  • Business-level fluency in both German and English.
