DCEO Chief Engineer , Data Center Engineering Operations

Amazon Switzerland seeks a Senior Chief Engineer for Data Center Engineering Operations in Zürich. This role oversees facility operations, ensuring peak efficiency of electrical and mechanical systems while leading technical teams.

AWS Infrastructure Services is responsible for the design, planning, and operation of its global infrastructure. This position acts as the primary focal point for all facility operations within a specific data center, ensuring the critical physical systems supporting Amazon Web Services remain reliable and efficient.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the daily maintenance and operation of mechanical and electrical equipment to ensure peak performance.
• Conduct planned preventative maintenance, handle daily corrective tasks, and manage emergency responses.
• Lead small to medium-sized projects from initial concept through to final completion.
• Train, direct, and support Engineering Operation Technicians in troubleshooting and general operations.
• Serve as the main escalation point for any facilities-related issues within the assigned data center region.
• Analyze equipment failures to determine root causes and implement corrective actions.
• Develop and roll out new standard operating procedures for technicians, Chief Engineers, and vendor teams.
• Ensure strict adherence to safety protocols by both Amazon staff and external vendors.
• Generate and submit weekly availability reports based on key metrics.

Requirements

• Hold an Engineering Degree in Electrical or Mechanical fields, OR possess an apprentice/trades certification or diploma in Electrical/HVAC with extensive relevant experience.
• Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
• Showcase solid electrical competencies, including both practical application and theoretical knowledge.
• Possess working knowledge of mechanical systems, including HVAC and controls.
• Be able to draft accurate support procedures, system documentation, and issue tracking entries in English.
• Have proficient IT skills, including experience with the MS Office suite.
• Be willing to travel between different data center sites and internationally when necessary.

Nice to have

• At least three years of experience in operations and on-call support for data center facilities or mission-critical production plants.
• An undergraduate degree in a technical discipline such as Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Industrial Engineering.
• Familiarity with building codes and regulations, including Life Safety, BOCA, NFPA, NEC, or OSHA standards.
• Prior experience in project management within data centers or similar critical infrastructure environments.
• Strong leadership, mentoring, and organizational capabilities.
