Critical Infrastructure Mechanical Engineer, Field Engineering

Amazon Switzerland seeks a Critical Infrastructure Mechanical Engineer in Zürich to support the full lifecycle of AWS data centers, from design to maintenance, ensuring operational excellence.

AWS Infrastructure Services is responsible for the design, planning, delivery, and operation of its global infrastructure. This position provides comprehensive life-cycle support for AWS Data Centers, covering everything from initial design inception through site improvements and ongoing maintenance. The role is integral to Amazon's goal of remaining the world's most customer-centric company.

Responsibilities

• Review design and equipment submittals for new data center projects in the assigned region.
• Conduct root cause analysis and develop corrective action documentation for site or equipment failures.
• Provide direct support for operational issues through ad-hoc training, complex procedure reviews, and event support.
• Lead the conceptual design for upgrades to existing data centers and develop design solutions.
• Initiate and lead engineering audits, including on-site visits to Amazon’s data centers.
• Serve as the resident engineer during new construction projects.
• Collaborate with internal teams including data center operations, design engineering, server hardware, and environmental health and safety.

Requirements

• Business-level fluency in written and spoken English.
• Willingness to travel between data center sites and internationally when necessary.
• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or an equivalent qualification.
• Experience in mission-critical facilities engineering, such as data centers, power generation, or oil and gas facilities.

Nice to have

• Skills in data analytics, querying, scripting, and handling large datasets.
• Direct experience with the design, construction, operation, or maintenance of mission-critical facilities, particularly data centers.
• Background as a resident engineer, field design consultant, or owner’s engineer.
• Knowledge of regional building codes and regulations.
• Ability to read, interpret, and create construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents.
• Experience taking design concepts from exploration and development through to deployment or mass production.
• Basic understanding of mechanical and/or electrical equipment and design related to data centers.
• Experience with EPMS, SCADA, or BMS controls systems (software and/or hardware).
• Business-level fluency in written and spoken German and English.
