Xelon seeks a Junior DevOps Engineer in Zug to support Swiss cloud infrastructure for regulated sectors. This hybrid role offers mentorship and growth toward independent platform operations.

Xelon aims to become the leading Swiss Cloud Enabler by providing secure, scalable, and automated infrastructure for finance, insurance, and public services. This position is designed for individuals at the beginning of their DevOps career, offering the chance to work closely with seasoned engineers and gradually take on full responsibility for platform operations.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and enhance system stability through patching, updates, backups, and certificate management under supervision.
  • Assist in deploying new services and facilitating migrations to upgraded solutions.
  • Participate in troubleshooting efforts and root-cause analysis across the platform.
  • Help build and sustain automated deployment pipelines using tools like Bitbucket Pipelines and ArgoCD.
  • Support release coordination, including rollbacks and deployment health checks.
  • Develop Infrastructure-as-Code components such as Kubernetes, Ansible, and Terraform with guidance.
  • Ensure configuration consistency across development, staging, and production environments.
  • Maintain observability tools including CheckMK, Loki, Grafana, Tempo, Prometheus, and Sentry.
  • Create dashboards and alerts to improve signal clarity and reduce noise.
  • Integrate automated security checks like SAST, DAST, and SCA into CI/CD workflows.
  • Ensure deployments comply with security standards, including TLS/SSL, firewalls, and network policies.
  • Write and update clear technical documentation.

Requirements

  • Completed IT apprenticeship (e.g., Informatiker/in EFZ) or comparable education, or initial professional experience in IT operations or infrastructure.
  • Strong Linux/Unix fundamentals, including shell usage, process management, file systems, permissions, and remote access (SSH/RDP).
  • Basic networking knowledge covering IP, DHCP, DNS, gateways, and firewalling.
  • Initial scripting experience with Bash, plus exposure to Python, PowerShell, or Golang.
  • Fundamental understanding of containers, distinguishing between containers and VMs, with basic Docker knowledge.
  • Fluent German and good English proficiency, both written and spoken.

Nice to have

  • Initial exposure to CI/CD and IaC tools such as Bitbucket Pipelines, ArgoCD, Terraform, and Ansible.
  • Familiarity with monitoring and security tools like Prometheus, Grafana, LGTM, and SAST/DAST/SCA.
  • Experience with Kubernetes, load balancing (Nginx, Apache, HAProxy, Traefik, Keepalived), OpenStack, or GitOps.
  • Relevant certifications such as CKA, Terraform Associate, or RHCE.
  • An enthusiastic homelab setup and a good sense of humor.
