Tecan seeks a Machine Learning Engineer for a 12-month fixed-term role in Switzerland. The position focuses on integrating laboratory automation with computational pipelines and developing AI-powered lab assistants.
This position sits within the Research and Development department, where the primary objective is to merge laboratory automation with computational workflows to drive scientific progress. The successful candidate will initially contribute to an innovative initiative aimed at creating an AI-driven lab assistant capable of managing automated experiments on liquid handling robots.
Responsibilities
- Create, build, and package automation interfaces for detection instruments and liquid handlers using contemporary programming frameworks.
- Build and maintain software development kits that allow AI, data science, and scientific personnel to access systems programmatically.
- Guarantee that APIs and integration layers are stable, thoroughly documented, and optimized for a positive developer experience.
- Construct translation layers that bridge experimental workflows with the company’s proprietary scripting language to facilitate seamless robot motion planning.
- Utilize large language models and code-generation tools to analyze protocol datasets and generate reliable, safe automation scripts.
- Partner with a diverse team to engineer robust, user-friendly laboratory automation solutions, including developing AI algorithms that enhance product user experience.
Requirements
- Possess a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Robotics, AI/ML, or a closely related discipline, or be actively pursuing such a qualification.
- Demonstrate strong proficiency in Python programming.
- Have practical experience working with transformer-based models from providers such as OpenAI or Anthropic.
- Show familiarity with robotics control, automation, or motion planning, along with a genuine interest in biotech and laboratory automation.
- Fluency in English is mandatory.
- Exhibit strong teamwork abilities, supported by excellent communication and technical presentation skills.
Nice to have
- Prior experience with laboratory automation systems is advantageous.
- Knowledge of C++ or C#, combined with an understanding of lab protocols, is beneficial.
- Proficiency in German is considered a plus.
