Adaptyv seeks a Mid-level Lab Automation Engineer in Lausanne to build and maintain automated lab infrastructure for AI-driven biology experiments.
The company is developing an automated laboratory environment where AI agents can independently conduct biological experiments. This role focuses on creating the software and hardware infrastructure that enables these AI systems to interact with the physical world, supporting the company's rapid growth and partnerships with leading biopharmaceutical and AI organizations.
Responsibilities
- Program laboratory instruments using Python, preferably with PyLabRobot or PyHamilton.
- Design and assemble work cells that coordinate multiple devices into a single, managed system.
- Integrate new equipment by analyzing control protocols and developing custom drivers.
- Develop software components, including drivers and microservices, to link hardware with the central platform.
- Collaborate with biological researchers to convert manual assays into dependable automated processes.
- Enhance system throughput and reliability through improved error handling, optimized scheduling, and robust hardware design.
Requirements
- Demonstrate a hands-on, experimental mindset, favoring script-based instrument control over graphical interfaces.
- Possess strong software engineering capabilities to produce clean, maintainable Python code for various integrations.
- Work independently without requiring detailed specifications or external training.
- Be comfortable leveraging AI coding assistants like Claude Code as a primary development tool.
- Apply strong debugging skills to troubleshoot issues spanning software, firmware, electronics, and mechanical systems.
Nice to have
- Previous experience with lab automation platforms such as PyHamilton, PyLabRobot, or Opentrons.
- Practical knowledge of electronics, microcontrollers, 3D printing, CAD, or general fabrication techniques.
