PhD Student 100% (m/w/d)

Eawag seeks a PhD candidate to enhance mechanistic lake models with planktonic biodiversity data, predicting responses to warming and resource shifts through lab and field work.

This position focuses on advancing mechanistic lake models by integrating greater planktonic biodiversity to forecast how community composition responds to combined gradients of warming and resource availability. The role is part of an international collaboration between Eawag, Wageningen University, NIOO-KNAW, and the University of Rhode Island, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct controlled laboratory experiments.
  • Collect samples from Swiss lakes during field campaigns.
  • Utilize collected data to inform, parameterize, and validate predictions made by lake models.
  • Collaborate closely with researchers specializing in lake ecosystem modeling.

Requirements

  • Hold a master’s degree in biology, biodiversity, aquatic ecology, evolutionary biology, limnology, oceanography, environmental science, or a closely related discipline.
  • Demonstrate a solid understanding of lake ecosystems and phytoplankton physiology, along with hands-on experience in running controlled, highly replicated laboratory experiments.
  • Possess developed computational skills and proficiency in at least one programming language, such as R or Python.
  • Thrive in dynamic team settings and work effectively in an integrated manner with other researchers.

Nice to have

  • Background or training in molecular biology.
  • Prior experience conducting field work.
