R&D Engineer (m/f/d) Ion Beam Sputtering

The company seeks a mid-level R&D Engineer to advance LEYBOLD OPTICS ion beam sputtering platforms and develop thin-film coating processes for optical applications.

This position focuses on enhancing ion beam sputtering technology and creating advanced coating solutions for high-demand optical uses. The role involves driving innovation in vacuum coating systems while supporting technical projects and customer needs.

Responsibilities

  • Design and refine ion beam sputtering methods to deposit optical thin-film layers.
  • Participate in creating, evaluating, and validating new components, process methods, and system capabilities.
  • Manage and carry out research and development initiatives alongside internal teams and outside collaborators.
  • Prepare technical documentation, development reports, and scientific articles.
  • Participate in global conferences and technical gatherings to stay updated on industry trends, share findings, and expand professional connections.
  • Set up and validate new vacuum coating installations.
  • Provide technical guidance to the sales department and assist clients with specialized knowledge.

Requirements

  • Hold a completed university degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Material Science, Physical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrate background in process development, experimental research, data analysis, or system setup.
  • Possess strong English communication skills.
  • Work in a structured, dependable, and problem-solving manner.
  • Be prepared for international travel to support customers, assist with system installation, and attend industry events.

Nice to have

  • Prior exposure to ion beam sputtering equipment, vacuum coating techniques, optical thin films, or optical interference filters.
  • Ability to communicate in German.
