Research Associate for in vivo Nonmalignant Hematology Research

Elan AG seeks a Research Associate to lead in vivo and in vitro studies on nonmalignant hematology. This mid-level, on-site role in Basel requires strong experimental design skills and animal handling certification.

Positioned within the Discovery unit, this role focuses on the preclinical assessment of new treatments for nonmalignant blood disorders. The successful candidate will manage experiments from start to finish while collaborating closely with clinical teams to support therapeutic development.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, conduct, and interpret both in vivo and in vitro experiments related to coagulation.
  • Evaluate the safety and efficacy of new drug candidates using molecular and biochemical testing methods.
  • Process and analyze patient-derived samples, including blood and plasma, in laboratory and ex vivo environments.
  • Analyze experimental data and share findings with the broader team.
  • Ensure accurate record-keeping and assist with laboratory safety, inventory control, and general organization.

Requirements

  • A BSc or MSc in Life Sciences with 2–3 years of practical experience in animal studies, or an apprenticeship as a Research Associate with 4–5 years of relevant industry or academic experience.
  • Valid LTK1, FELASA, or equivalent certification for animal work.
  • Proven ability to administer compounds, monitor subjects, and perform organ sampling in live animals.
  • Solid practical background in in vitro techniques, such as DNA/RNA extraction, ELISA, qPCR, and protein-based assays.
  • Demonstrated independence in designing experiments and analyzing results.
  • Capacity to manage full study lifecycles without constant supervision.
  • Fluent proficiency in English.

Nice to have

  • Practical experience with thrombin generation and chromogenic substrate assays.
  • Background in rodent surgical procedures, including in vivo thrombosis and bleeding models.
  • Understanding of hemostasis, coagulation, or thrombosis biology.
  • Previous experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology sector.
