Bachem seeks a Senior Building Automation Engineer to lead BMS design and implementation for a major new pharmaceutical production site in Stein AG, Switzerland.
This position serves as the Subject Matter Expert for Building Automation Systems within a strategic capital expenditure program aimed at expanding production capacity at a new facility in Sisslerfeld. The successful candidate will be responsible for defining, delivering, and integrating advanced automation solutions within a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) regulated environment.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary expert for Building Management Systems (BMS) on a high-value capital project exceeding CHF 100 million.
- Direct the design, specification, and deployment of automation systems covering HVAC, fire safety, access control, gas detection, and video surveillance.
- Establish and evaluate automation strategies, system architectures, and interface requirements.
- Integrate BMS solutions seamlessly into the broader plant automation ecosystem.
- Create and review essential lifecycle documentation, including User Requirement Specifications (URS), Functional Specifications (FS), Design Specifications (DS), and data integrity concepts.
- Ensure strict adherence to GMP, GAMP5, Annex 1/11, 21 CFR Part 11, and data integrity standards.
- Manage and coordinate external engineering firms, system integrators, and vendors.
- Oversee commissioning, qualification (CQV), and validation processes.
- Collaborate with Engineering, Operations, IT/OT, CSV, and Quality teams.
- Support the standardization of BMS concepts for the new site.
- Lead troubleshooting, performance optimization, and digitalization efforts.
- Maintain project timelines, quality standards, and budget targets.
Requirements
- Degree in Automation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Building Technology, or equivalent.
- 8–10+ years of experience in building or industrial automation.
- Proven track record in large CAPEX projects in pharmaceutical or GMP-regulated environments.
- Strong expertise in Building Management Systems (e.g. Siemens, Honeywell, Johnson Controls).
- Strong expertise in HVAC and utility automation.
- Strong expertise in PLC / SCADA / DCS integration.
- Strong expertise in Industrial communication protocols (BACnet, Modbus, OPC).
- Solid understanding of GMP / GAMP5 and CSV processes.
- Solid understanding of Commissioning & Qualification (IQ/OQ/PQ).
- Solid understanding of Data integrity and cybersecurity in automation.
- Experience managing engineering partners and contractors.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work in interdisciplinary teams.
