Senior Data Engineering Consultant (German-speaking)

MLAB seeks a German-speaking Senior Data Engineering Consultant in Basel to lead data and AI solution design, implementation, and operations for clients.

This position serves as a trusted advisor and thought leader in Data Products and Data Mesh strategies. The consultant guides the entire project lifecycle, helping organizations build reliable data and machine learning systems while acting as a bridge between technical execution and business value.

Responsibilities

• Guide clients in unlocking the value of data and AI, covering everything from initial use case discovery to the operational integration of ML models, LLMs, and GenAI tools.
• Architect, validate, and maintain end-to-end data, model, and code pipelines, ensuring robust DataOps, MLOps, and DevOps practices.
• Support both technical and non-technical stakeholders in adopting data science, management, and reliability engineering principles across the full project spectrum.
• Evaluate client needs to define and recommend the most suitable technical solutions.
• Transition data initiatives from prototype or pilot stages into stable production environments, implementing best practices for traceability, scalability, reliability, and automation.
• Develop solution blueprints and concepts, including frameworks for Reliable Data Products and Efficient Data Meshes.
• Take full ownership of deliverables, present outcomes to diverse stakeholders, and collaborate actively with both client and internal teams while sharing expertise.

Requirements

• At least five years of professional experience as a Data or Software Engineer, with a specific focus on data and machine learning systems.
• Fluent command of both German and English in written and spoken communication.
• Possession of a Swiss passport or a valid work permit for EU/EFTA citizens.
• Prior experience in client-facing or consulting positions.
• Hands-on technical proficiency in programming, distributed systems, SQL and NoSQL databases, cloud services, REST APIs, microservices, Docker, Kubernetes, Agile methodologies, and CI/CD pipelines.

Nice to have

• Certifications from major data and AI platforms such as Snowflake, Databricks, AWS, Azure, or MS Fabric.
• Knowledge of DataOps best practices, Data Mesh concepts, Data Lake/Warehouse architectures, and Reliability Engineering.
