Novartis seeks a Senior Expert Science & Technology in Basel, CH, to lead analytical research for oligonucleotides within the ARD team. The role requires a PhD with 3+ years’ experience or a Master’s with 10+ years in pharmaceutical analytics, focusing on mass spectrometry and regulatory-compliant methods.

This position is part of the Analytical Research & Development (ARD) team within Technical R&D, tasked with characterizing and analyzing drug substances and products from early discovery through to commercial production.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, carry out, and report on scientific experiments aligned with the ARD Oligonucleotides Analytics project.
  • Independently design, execute, interpret, and document analytical work for oligonucleotides (drug substance and drug product) using advanced analytical methods.
  • Develop and implement mass spectrometry techniques tailored for oligonucleotide analysis.
  • Promote best practices and share technical knowledge within the project team and broader organization.
  • Prepare analytical documentation in line with global project strategies and support strategic planning and execution.
  • Contribute to laboratory experiment planning, including scheduling, monitoring, and data evaluation.
  • Act as primary point of contact for scientific and technical matters with internal stakeholders.
  • Provide scientific guidance and mentorship to lab associates.
  • Manage technical analytical deviations and propose corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs).
  • Support audits and health authority inspections to ensure no major findings in assigned areas.
  • Adhere to SOPs, GMP, GLP, QM, HSE, ISRM, and Novartis guidelines.
  • Collaborate effectively and encourage knowledge sharing across teams.

Requirements

  • PhD in analytical chemistry with at least 3 years of experience, or a Master’s degree with 10+ years in the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Strong skills in hyphenated analytical separation and detection methods, including mass spectrometry.
  • Solid understanding of laboratory management and techniques such as HPLC, UV-spectrometry, and titration.
  • Experience with quality principles in drug development, including GMP, and awareness of regulatory and quality expectations.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Excellent coordination, communication, teamwork, self-motivation, and quick learning capabilities.
