Senior Researcher in Spatial Audio and Instrument Design (80%, f/m/d)

The Zurich University of the Arts seeks a Senior Researcher for a four-year SNSF-funded project on spatial audio and instrument design, based in Zurich.

This position supports a four-year research initiative backed by the Swiss National Science Foundation, which examines the disconnect between high-resolution 3D virtual sound rendering and the physical aspects of post-instrumental performance practices. The role is situated at the Toni-Areal campus in Zurich.

Responsibilities

  • Create spatial sound synthesis workflows for live performance using tools such as Max/MSP, SuperCollider, Pd, and Python.
  • Build real-time systems that translate motion capture and computer vision data into synthesis outputs via HOA and WFS renderers.
  • Assist with strategic and operational management tasks, including budget oversight, research scheduling, and cross-work package communication.
  • Publish findings, present at conferences, and manage open-source software and hardware resources on the project platform.
  • Organize and evaluate expert workshops, contributing to the qualitative analysis of user reception and spatial presence.

Requirements

  • A PhD in Computer Music, Sound/Music Technology, Interactive Media, Computational Arts, Electroacoustic Composition, Electronic Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience within contemporary music practice.
  • Strong theoretical and practical understanding of signal processing and spatial perception.
  • Extensive background in HOA and WFS technologies, including proficiency with IRCAM Spat.
  • Proven expertise in sound synthesis using Max/MSP, Pd, SuperCollider, or Faust, along with strong coding skills in C++ and Python.
  • Experience in digital instrument design and human-computer interaction involving sensors, microcontrollers (Arduino, Raspberry Pi), and computer vision frameworks (OpenCV, MediaPipe, ML-based feature extraction).
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English.

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with the odot OSC ecosystem.
  • Experience or a strong interest in artistic research and qualitative research methodologies.
