Senior Software Engineer - Embedded (f/m/d)

Hexagon Robotics GmbH · Zürich

Hexagon Robotics seeks a Senior Software Engineer to build embedded software for humanoid robots in Zürich, covering firmware to Linux and system integration.

As part of Hexagon’s robotics division, this position focuses on transforming prototype concepts into serial production-ready robotic platforms. The engineer will develop the core embedded software that drives actuators and sensors, bridging the gap between low-level hardware control and high-level robotic algorithms to address industrial labor challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Create, validate, and sustain embedded software solutions for all robot sensors and actuators, spanning from microcontroller firmware to embedded Linux environments.
  • Establish and document internal system architectures and interfaces, ensuring clarity and usability for cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Collaborate closely with robotic algorithm specialists and electrical engineers to integrate systems and conduct testing on physical hardware.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or a related discipline, accompanied by a minimum of five years in embedded software development.
  • At least three years of hands-on experience using modern C++ in production settings.
  • Proven track record in developing drivers for embedded Linux systems using C/C++.
  • Experience writing firmware for microcontrollers, such as STM32.
  • Solid understanding of industrial networking standards, specifically EtherCAT and CAN/CANopen.
  • Familiarity with low-level serial communication protocols including SPI, UART, and I²C.
  • Background in processing image pipelines and working with camera modules on embedded Linux (utilizing MIPI, V4L2, and GStreamer).
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics and perform hardware debugging with oscilloscopes and logic analyzers.
  • Strong capability in designing software architectures for complex, distributed embedded systems.
  • Commitment to modern development practices, including CI/CD integration and a DevOps mindset.
  • Experience implementing automated testing strategies, covering unit/integration tests and hardware-in-the-loop scenarios.
  • Fluency in English is mandatory; basic German proficiency is considered an asset.

Nice to have

  • Prior exposure to Python, ROS2, Zephyr, or NVIDIA camera frameworks.
