ETH Zurich seeks a Senior Software Engineer for secure inter-domain networking, focusing on SCION-based infrastructure, system design, and large-scale network implementation in Zürich.
This position at ETH Zurich involves building and maintaining software for network control and data planes, as well as developing endhost applications using the SCION architecture. The role centers on designing robust systems, managing software releases, and validating prototypes through the global production network.
Responsibilities
- Develop software components for network infrastructure control and data planes.
- Create applications and network stack elements for endhosts utilizing SCION.
- Participate in code reviews, release processes, and testing procedures.
- Evaluate and test prototypes on the global production network.
- Oversee local testbed resources and ensure their proper functioning.
- Prepare and update technical documentation.
Requirements
- Solid grasp of network security principles and computer networking concepts.
- Master's degree in computer science or engineering, or equivalent professional experience.
- Over five years designing, building, and testing large-scale systems with a focus on security, scalability, and performance.
- Extensive background administering Unix-like systems and managing complex machine networks.
- Proficiency in Go, Rust, C++, or C within Linux environments.
- Strong scripting skills using Python.
- Proven track record contributing to open-source projects and navigating large codebases.
- Competent in Unix/FreeBSD/Linux administration, including system setup and security basics.
- Familiarity with software engineering practices and system design.
- Comfortable with Git, containers, CI/CD pipelines, Ansible, Prometheus, and Grafana.
- Able to juggle multiple projects and support student supervision.
- Fluent in English.
Nice to have
- In-depth understanding of low-level networking and Linux network internals, such as network stack implementation, TUN/TAP devices, and Netfilter Queue.
- Comprehensive knowledge of network protocols and techniques, including QUIC, TCP/IP, NAT, NAT traversal, middle boxes, tunnelling, VPNs, and raw sockets.
- Familiarity with cryptographic operations and protocols.
- Active participation in relevant communities like IETF, Golang/Rust meetups, and NOGs.
- Experience with Linux Kernel or mobile programming; knowledge of DPDK, AF_XDP, or eBPF is a plus.
