The Blockchain & Climate Institute seeks a Principal/Senior Technology Officer to lead AI strategy and team management for climate-focused projects. This unpaid, part-time remote role requires extensive AI expertise and a passion for sustainability.

The Blockchain & Climate Institute operates as an international, volunteer-driven think tank dedicated to leveraging blockchain and data technologies to combat climate change. This senior position reports directly to the CTO, providing strategic and technical leadership for Artificial Intelligence across all institute projects.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and implement the AI technology strategy and roadmap for all institute initiatives.
  • Recruit, train, mentor, and evaluate the AI technology team.
  • Identify optimal datasets and AI models to address specific use cases and objectives.
  • Design, develop, test, and deploy AI, machine learning, and data science applications.
  • Ensure technology products meet quality, reliability, security, and scalability standards.
  • Monitor solution performance and impact, providing recommendations for improvement.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including partners, sponsors, and beneficiaries.
  • Stay informed on emerging technology trends, climate issues, and sustainability developments.
  • Identify and generate opportunities for strategic partnerships.
  • Represent the institute at conferences, presenting research findings and engaging with key stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Strong oral communication skills to build relationships and interact professionally with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Excellent organizational abilities to manage competing demands under pressure.
  • Proven experience in computing or math-related tasks within Agile technology projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to build constructive stakeholder relationships.
  • Experience working independently and collaboratively to drive projects forward.
  • Ability to design, plan, and facilitate independent research while meeting tight deadlines.
  • Strong presentation and interpersonal skills to convey ideas persuasively.
  • Proficiency in programming languages and tools for data analysis and AI development, including Python, R, TensorFlow, PyTorch, and Scikit-learn.
  • Familiarity with data sources, formats, and standards such as APIs, JSON, XML, and CSV.
  • Experience developing and deploying applications on cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud.
  • Background in leading technology teams and projects, including agile methodologies, budgeting, and documentation.
  • Passion for climate and sustainability issues, with a willingness to learn beyond technology.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Fluency in English.
  • At least five years of professional experience in AI, machine learning, data science, or a related field.
