VP, Head System Solutions R&D

Tecan Group AG seeks a VP, Head System Solutions R&D to lead strategic development of complex life sciences and medical technology systems in Switzerland. The role requires extensive experience in systems engineering, product development, and leadership in regulated industries, with a hybrid work model and international travel (30%).

In this leadership role, the individual will guide the strategic direction of System Solutions R&D for Tecan’s life sciences and medical technology products. They will define system architecture, oversee multidisciplinary teams, and ensure product excellence across hardware, software, automation, and regulated workflows, from concept to market launch and lifecycle management.

Responsibilities

• Lead the strategic direction of System Solutions R&D, including systems engineering, architecture, integration, and application science.
• Own the system architecture, strategy, and technology roadmap for the entire product portfolio.
• Establish standards for requirements engineering, interface management, and system integration across teams.
• Collaborate with PMO, Product Management, Marketing, and business leaders to shape product roadmaps and portfolio strategy.
• Lead technical assessments, feasibility studies, and risk evaluations to support investment decisions.
• Promote best practices in design controls, risk management, verification, and validation processes.
• Provide executive oversight for system integration, verification, and release readiness decisions.
• Develop technical leadership within the function through hiring, performance management, and talent growth.
• Build cross-functional partnerships and represent System Solutions in executive reviews and governance meetings.
• Encourage continuous improvement, technical excellence, and innovation within the team.

Requirements

• Degree in Engineering or a related technical field; Master’s degree preferred.
• 15+ years of experience in systems engineering, product development, and innovation in life sciences, diagnostics, medical devices, or other regulated industries.
• Proven ability to lead system architecture and cross-functional technical execution for complex, multidisciplinary products.
• Track record of building and leading high-performing teams in global, matrixed organizations.
• Senior leadership experience in developing multidisciplinary R&D organizations.
• Experience coaching, mentoring, and developing technical leaders.
• Ability to lead across different geographies and cultures, supporting diversity and inclusion.
• Strong communication and influencing skills in English.
• Willingness to travel internationally (30% of time).
