Writing Systems Engineering

Bobst · schweiz

Bobst seeks a Senior Writing Systems Engineer to lead the design, optimization, and performance validation of next-generation industrial inkjet printing platforms for global packaging applications.

This role focuses on strengthening the R&D team by taking full ownership of the writing systems that form the core of digital printing platforms. The engineer is responsible for driving performance metrics such as image quality, robustness, and uptime, ensuring that systems meet the rigorous demands of real-world production environments from concept through to launch.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the architectural design and optimization of industrial inkjet writing systems.
  • Set and challenge performance benchmarks for printhead stability, drop accuracy, fluid delivery, and thermal management.
  • Serve as the technical owner for writing systems from initial concept to final product release.
  • Balance performance goals with quality standards, cost efficiency, and manufacturability.
  • Convert business requirements into reliable engineering solutions.
  • Create physical and empirical models covering fluid dynamics, drop formation, and thermal behaviors.
  • Plan and conduct advanced experiments using Design of Experiments (DOE) methodologies.
  • Analyze experimental data to enhance system reliability and behavior.
  • Spearhead root-cause analysis for complex, multi-disciplinary issues.
  • Implement corrective actions across hardware, software, and material components.
  • Provide support for product issues throughout the development lifecycle and in field operations.
  • Mentor engineers in problem-solving techniques and innovative practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in Physics, Electronics, Fluidics, Material Science, Print Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in industrial inkjet, drop-on-demand (DoD), printing, coating, or fluid deposition technologies.
  • Proven hands-on expertise with industrial inkjet writing systems, including printheads, waveform optimization, and fluid behavior analysis.
  • Experience in system-level design, integration, and optimization of multidisciplinary industrial systems.
  • Background working in industrial production environments with strict reliability and uptime requirements.
  • Strong analytical skills with practical experience in DOE, root-cause analysis, modeling, and data-driven engineering.
  • Deep understanding of complex physical systems, including fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and system dynamics.
  • Proficiency in designing experimental setups, analyzing data, and building models.
  • Familiarity with tools such as MATLAB, Python, or similar analytical software.
  • Solid knowledge of inkjet or drop-on-demand system architectures.
  • A strong systems-thinking mindset.
  • Ability to lead through influence rather than hierarchical authority.
  • Excellent communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Comfort level with navigating ambiguity and solving complex challenges.
  • A natural curiosity and a drive for innovation.
