AI Backend Engineer (AI Workflow Systems)

Bjak seeks a Senior AI Backend Engineer to design and maintain high-performance backend systems for AI-driven insurance workflows. This fully remote role focuses on orchestration, latency optimization, and system reliability within a global team.

This position operates at the intersection of AI models, backend infrastructure, and end-users. The engineer will be responsible for building the core systems that power AI-powered insurance workflows, ensuring they are scalable, observable, and efficient in a production environment.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain backend infrastructure that supports AI-driven insurance processes in live environments.
• Create orchestration layers that integrate machine learning models, APIs, business logic, and workflow engines.
• Construct inference pipelines for systems utilizing large language models and AI-assisted automation.
• Enhance the performance of AI services by reducing latency, increasing throughput, and managing costs.
• Define clear service boundaries between backend components, machine learning modules, and product interfaces.
• Establish comprehensive observability practices, including logging, metrics, tracing, alerting, and incident management.
• Troubleshoot and resolve root causes of issues within distributed AI systems in production.
• Partner with frontend, product, operations, and machine learning teams to deliver complete features.
• Drive continuous improvements in system reliability, scalability, and overall performance.

Requirements

• Proven experience in backend engineering for production-grade systems.
• Background in building or managing high-throughput, low-latency services.
• Knowledge of AI technologies, including large language models, embeddings, or workflow automation.
• Experience with distributed systems architecture and debugging in production.
• Solid grasp of API design, data flow management, and system design principles.
