FELFEL seeks a Senior Edge Platform Engineer in Zürich to own the edge runtime for smart appliances. The role requires deep expertise in device fleets, networking, and languages like Go or C#.
This position grants immediate, full ownership of the edge domain for smart refrigerators and coffee machine controllers across Switzerland and the United States. As a core member of a compact eight-person engineering group, the engineer will define hardware specifications, manage vendor integrations, and ensure the reliability of devices in the field.
Responsibilities
- Manage the complete lifecycle of the edge runtime for smart fridges and Gavetti coffee machines, including zero-touch provisioning, device bootstrapping, call-home mechanisms, and on-device applications.
- Lead the consolidation of fleet management onto a unified, robust platform, such as Azure IoT Hub or KubeEdge, while making and defending key architectural decisions.
- Simplify the technology stack by reducing the variety of programming languages executed on edge devices.
- Partner directly with the Head of Engineering to define software contracts, select hardware vendors, and specify next-generation device requirements.
- Maintain and oversee critical vendor relationships, including those with badge reader suppliers and other integration partners.
- Provide the team with an accurate, realistic view of system performance and operational status in live field environments.
Requirements
- Over five years of experience building and operating production systems, specifically managing real device fleets with live users, handling outages, and deploying OTA updates.
- Strong proficiency in at least two of these languages: C#, Go, or Kotlin.
- Solid understanding of edge networking (VPNs, NAT, unstable connections), running Linux or Android on constrained hardware, OS-level debugging, and observability for offline-tolerant systems.
- Hands-on experience with Modbus, USB, serial connections, interpreting sensor datasheets, and working with vendor SDKs.
- Fluent English communication skills.
- Possession of a Swiss passport or a valid work permit for Switzerland.
Nice to have
- Experience with tools like Balena, Azure IoT Hub, KubeEdge, Kubernetes, or Docker, or background in commercial appliance ecosystems.
- Ability to communicate in German.
