EPFL seeks a Laboratory Manager to oversee data management, regulatory compliance, and experimental research support within the Laboratory of Photonics and Quantum Measurements in Lausanne.

The Laboratory of Photonics and Quantum Measurements at EPFL is looking for a Laboratory Manager to ensure the smooth operation of its experimental research. This position focuses on implementing robust data management strategies, maintaining regulatory compliance, and coordinating shared infrastructure to support the team's scientific goals.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and uphold laboratory best practices, user protocols, and documentation standards.
  • Ensure laboratories and storage areas remain safe, organized, and clean in line with internal rules.
  • Set up and manage a booking system for equipment usage by spin-off companies.
  • Coordinate the setup of new experiments, lab spaces, and renovations in the Advanced Science Building.
  • Conduct safety audits and provide training for both internal and external users.
  • Manage laboratory notebooks using TEAMS.
  • Administer internal IT simulation software, including COMSOL, Lumerical, Ansys, and Sonnet.
  • Support the documentation of scientific and technical results through tools like GIT and task management software.
  • Lead weekly organization meetings with sub-teams.
  • Onboard and train new students, postdocs, and technical staff on laboratory routines.
  • Collaborate with the R&D team and senior processing engineers to maintain fabrication activities.
  • Improve routines for photonic chip packaging, testing, and experimental integration.
  • Assist with purchasing, installing, troubleshooting, and maintaining large-scale equipment.
  • Maintain an internal database for materials and equipment inventory.
  • Keep labs orderly using ASANA and adopt new technologies for efficient knowledge and sample management.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or Computer Science.
  • Prior management experience in a comparable role.
  • Strong technical problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication skills, open-mindedness, and critical thinking.
  • Working proficiency in both English and French (written and spoken).

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with software and computer programming, such as Python and GIT.
  • Basic experience working in a cleanroom environment.
  • A willingness to learn new technologies and processes.
