ETH Zurich offers a fixed-term doctoral position in the COMBINE network, focusing on advanced tomographic techniques for vibration analysis in rod bundles using gamma-tomography and machine learning. The role is based onsite at PSI in Villigen, Switzerland.

This doctoral position is part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Training Network COMBINE, aiming to develop advanced tomographic methods for evaluating vibrations in rod bundles. The research leverages a high-resolution gamma tomography system to support decarbonization efforts in industry and power generation.

Responsibilities

  • Build experimental setups including single rods and rod bundles
  • Conduct vibration measurements on rods and rod bundles using the in-house gamma-tomography system
  • Apply AI-based methods to reconstruct and visualize vibrating rods and bundles using sensor and tomography data
  • Utilize machine learning techniques for noise reduction and enhancement of tomographic data

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in engineering, physics, applied mathematics, computer science, or a closely related field
  • Solid foundation in mathematics and machine learning
  • Proficiency in programming with Python, C++, or similar languages
  • Experience in data processing and interpreting machine learning models
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of an international research team
  • Strong written and spoken English skills

Nice to have

  • Practical experience with experimental setups
  • Basic understanding of electronics
