PhD Student in X-ray imaging: Multi-scale characterization of bone

The Paul Scherrer Institut seeks a PhD candidate to analyze bone structure using synchrotron X-ray techniques, with enrollment at EPFL.

This position is part of the Structure and Mechanics of Advanced Materials Group within the Center for Photon Science at PSI. The successful candidate will be enrolled in the doctoral school of EPFL while conducting research.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze the microstructure of long bones across various species using synchrotron X-ray imaging and correlate these findings with mechanical performance.
  • Create and utilize Python-based software tools for X-ray imaging analysis in close cooperation with the research team.
  • Assist in planning and executing X-ray characterization experiments on mineralized biological tissues, specifically focusing on small-angle X-ray scattering tensor tomography.
  • Disseminate research outcomes through publications in scientific journals and presentations at global conferences.

Requirements

  • Hold a Master’s degree in Biology, Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related discipline.
  • Demonstrate strong proficiency in written and spoken English.

  • Prior experience with Python programming is viewed favorably.
  • A strong interest in interdisciplinary work that connects biological sciences, computational methods, and X-ray technologies.
