The Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) in Villigen, CH, is seeking a PhD Student in X-ray imaging to investigate bone structure and mechanical properties using synchrotron X-ray imaging. The candidate will be enrolled in the doctoral school of the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL).
This position focuses on analyzing the structure of long bones across various species through synchrotron X-ray imaging and connecting these findings to their mechanical properties. The successful candidate will develop and utilize Python-based analysis tools alongside the research group, assist in designing X-ray characterization experiments on mineralized biological tissues, and contribute to scientific publications and conference presentations. The role is part of the doctoral program at EPFL.
Responsibilities
- Analyze the structure of long bones from different species using synchrotron X-ray imaging and correlate these structures with mechanical properties.
- Create and implement Python-based tools for X-ray imaging analysis in collaboration with the research group.
- Assist in planning and executing X-ray characterization experiments on mineralized biological tissues, specifically small-angle X-ray scattering tensor tomography.
- Publish research findings in scientific journals and present results at international conferences.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Biology, Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
- Strong communication skills in English.
Nice to have
- Experience with programming in Python is considered an asset.
