Novartis seeks a Medical Director in Gastroenterology for early clinical development, based in Basel, Switzerland. The role involves leading phase 1 and 2 trials, shaping clinical development plans, and collaborating across global teams in translational medicine.
As a Medical Director in Translational Medicine Gastroenterology, you will lead early clinical development efforts from first-in-human to proof-of-concept studies, supporting progression to Phase 3. You will report to the TM Head and play a key role in cross-functional project teams, contributing to target identification and clinical pathway planning for diseases with unmet needs.
Responsibilities
- Lead global clinical trial teams through phase 1 and 2 development stages
- Develop and draft the early clinical development strategy
- Serve as the medical lead for early-phase clinical studies
- Represent the project team in key decision-making boards
- Act as primary liaison for internal and external key opinion leaders
- Oversee the publication and presentation of clinical study results internally and externally
- Collaborate with biomarker experts to implement relevant strategies
- Work with research scientists to design and execute preclinical support plans aligned with program goals
- Participate actively in interactions with health authorities
Requirements
- Must be a medical doctor with board certification in gastroenterology
- Requires several years of clinical experience in treating IBD patients (UC and CD)
- Ability to learn quickly and work independently in a complex environment
- Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams within a matrix organization
- Strong communication and presentation skills
Nice to have
- Research experience, such as a Ph.D., is advantageous but not required
- Experience in drug development as a trial investigator or in the pharmaceutical industry is beneficial but not mandatory
- Publications in the field of IBD are considered a plus but not essential
