Medical Director, Gastroenterology, Early Clinical Development

Novartis Pharma Schweiz AG seeks a Medical Director for Gastroenterology in Early Clinical Development based in Basel. The role leads Phase 1 and 2 clinical trials for IBD treatments within a global translational medicine team.

This position supports the Translational Medicine Discovery & Profiling (TMDP) division by guiding innovative science from initial discovery to patient application. The Medical Director will focus on first-in-human and proof-of-concept studies, serving as a central figure in global cross-functional teams that design early research projects. The role reports directly to the TM Head.

Responsibilities

• Direct global clinical trial teams during Phase 1 and Phase 2 development stages.
• Create early clinical development strategies and plans.
• Provide medical leadership for early-stage clinical investigations.
• Represent the department in key decision-making forums.
• Act as the main point of contact for internal stakeholders and external key opinion leaders.
• Manage the publication and presentation of clinical study outcomes to internal and external audiences.
• Partner with biomarker specialists to ensure proper implementation.
• Collaborate with research scientists to define and execute preclinical support strategies for program goals.
• Engage actively in interactions with health authorities.

Requirements

• Board-certified medical doctor specializing in gastroenterology.
• Proven clinical background managing patients with inflammatory bowel disease (UC and CD).
• Strong capacity for rapid learning and autonomous work.
• Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary teams within a matrix structure.
• Superior communication and presentation capabilities.

Nice to have

• Research background, such as a Ph.D., is advantageous.
• Prior experience as a trial investigator or in pharmaceutical drug development is beneficial.
• Published work in the IBD field is considered a plus.
