Payments Engineer (Remote)

over99 seeks a Senior Payments Engineer to architect and maintain high-throughput financial systems for its gaming and blockchain platform, working remotely from Switzerland.

This position sits within a rapidly expanding, well-capitalized startup operating at the convergence of gaming and blockchain technologies. The successful candidate will assume full ownership of the payment architecture, designing and implementing next-generation systems that handle core monetary flows with precision and reliability.

Responsibilities

• Integrate various fiat payment methods, including cards, bank transfers, e-wallets, and local rails, via payment service providers and gateways.
• Develop and maintain core financial workflows such as deposits, withdrawals, refunds, payouts, chargebacks, and settlement processes.
• Design ledger and balance-tracking mechanisms to ensure accurate, auditable money movement.
• Ensure transactional integrity in distributed environments by implementing idempotency, consistency, exactly-once processing, and safe retry logic.
• Manage PSP webhooks, callbacks, and asynchronous updates, performing reconciliation against provider records.
• Build and optimize scalable, low-latency Node.js services capable of handling high-throughput transactional workloads.
• Maintain the performance, reliability, and security of payment APIs.
• Collaborate with product, risk, finance, and engineering teams to deliver end-to-end payment features.
• Promote best practices in code quality, testing, CI/CD, and deployment while sharing domain expertise with the team.

Requirements

• At least five years of professional experience in backend software engineering.
• Proven track record of integrating fiat payments through internal systems or PSP/gateway APIs.
• Deep understanding of transactional correctness, including idempotency, consistency, concurrency, and safe money handling under failure conditions.
• Strong proficiency in Node.js for building scalable backend services.
• Experience with relational databases, particularly PostgreSQL.
• Solid knowledge of distributed systems and client-server architecture.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and modern development workflows.
• A mindset focused on security and reliability.

Nice to have

• Background in crypto, fintech, or iGaming/gambling platforms.
• Experience with specific payment service providers or gateways.
• Familiarity with reconciliation, settlement, and double-entry ledger design.
• Knowledge of PCI-DSS or other payments/financial compliance requirements.
• Exposure to open banking, multi-currency handling, or FX.
• Knowledge of cloud deployment (AWS) and containerized environments (Docker, ECS).
