The University of Bern seeks a PostDoc to analyze exoplanet atmospheres using JWST data and Bayesian methods, supporting a major research programme on sub-Neptunes.

This position supports the IN/AT-SYNC JWST large programme focused on studying the atmospheres of sub-Neptune planets within resonant systems. The successful candidate will contribute to obtaining and interpreting transmission spectra for these worlds.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize Bayesian statistical techniques to analyze astronomical data.
  • Simulate and model transits of exoplanets.
  • Derive spectra from JWST time-series observations and determine chemical abundances.
  • Investigate the relationship between sub-Neptune interiors and their atmospheres.
  • Provide teaching assistance.
  • Oversee Master's level student projects.
  • Guide current PhD candidates.

Requirements

  • Strong proficiency in applying Bayesian statistics to astronomical datasets.
  • Hands-on experience with exoplanetary transit modeling.
  • Comprehensive understanding of atmospheric physics, including chemistry and radiative transfer.
  • Demonstrated history of independent research achievements.
