Eawag seeks a Postdoc to build analytical pipelines for detecting invasive aquatic species via eDNA. This two-year role focuses on bioinformatics, data mining, and tool development within the ETH Domain.
This two-year fixed-term position supports the NRP82 initiative and a grant from the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment. The successful candidate will design and implement semiautomated workflows to monitor invasive alien species using environmental DNA data, bridging technical development with practical stakeholder needs.
Responsibilities
- Design and refine analytical workflows to process existing environmental DNA datasets for invasive species detection.
- Build reference databases for metabarcoding by extracting and organizing data from scientific literature.
- Create end-to-end, semi-automated pipelines specifically tailored for invasive species monitoring and identification.
- Validate new methods through proof-of-concept testing on real-world aquatic environmental DNA samples.
- Disseminate findings in high-impact peer-reviewed journals while adhering to FAIR data principles.
- Develop practical, ready-to-use tools in partnership with external stakeholders and project partners.
Requirements
- A PhD in Molecular Ecology, Bioinformatics, Biodiversity, Data Sciences, or a closely related discipline.
- Proven track record in bioinformatics and the analysis of environmental DNA metabarcoding data.
- Experience handling biodiversity or invasive alien species datasets.
- Solid programming skills and general data analysis expertise.

- Deep conceptual knowledge of molecular or freshwater ecology, including a strong grasp of ecological theory.
- A demonstrated commitment to open and reproducible research practices, such as using version control systems and FAIR principles.
