Eawag seeks a Postdoctoral Researcher to enhance lake models with planktonic biodiversity data through lab experiments and field sampling in Switzerland.
This position is part of an international collaboration involving Eawag, Wageningen University, NIOO-KNAW, and the University of Rhode Island. The researcher will upgrade mechanistic lake models to better predict how planktonic communities respond to warming and resource changes, primarily by conducting controlled laboratory experiments with wild phytoplankton isolates and supporting field work in Swiss lakes.
Responsibilities
- Execute controlled laboratory experiments utilizing wild phytoplankton isolates.
- Perform field sampling activities across Swiss lakes.
- Apply collected data to inform, parameterize, and validate predictions made by lake ecosystem models.
- Work closely with specialists in lake ecosystem modeling.
Requirements
- A PhD in biology, biodiversity, aquatic ecology, evolutionary biology, limnology, oceanography, environmental science, or a closely related discipline.
- Solid understanding of lake ecosystems and phytoplankton physiology.
- Proven experience in designing and running highly replicated, controlled laboratory experiments.
- Strong computational abilities with proficiency in at least one programming language such as R or Python.
- Capacity to integrate individual research within broader projects and thrive in dynamic team settings.
Nice to have
- Background in molecular biology, especially regarding the collection and analysis of gene expression data.
- Prior experience conducting field work.
