R&D Battery Engineer (m/f/d)

Sonova seeks a Senior R&D Battery Engineer in Stäfa to lead battery innovation for hearing instruments and charging systems, integrating next-generation energy solutions in a regulated medical device setting.

This position focuses on advancing battery technology within Sonova’s hearing instruments and charging systems. The engineer guides energy solutions from initial technology scouting through to final product integration, operating within a collaborative and strictly regulated medical device environment.

Responsibilities

  • Identify, assess, and validate emerging battery chemistries, packaging designs, and manufacturing techniques.
  • Partner with external suppliers to evaluate new technologies and facilitate their adoption into Sonova products.
  • Oversee battery characterization, verification, validation, and reliability testing throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Integrate battery systems into hearing aids and chargers by coordinating with electrical, mechanical, software, and quality engineering teams.
  • Support Battery Management System (BMS) development, including charging logic, battery modeling, and State of Charge (SoC) and State of Health (SoH) estimation.
  • Create Python-based tools to streamline testing, data analysis, and engineering workflows.
  • Utilize statistical methods and Design of Experiments (DoE) to optimize performance and support data-driven decisions.
  • Monitor industry trends to translate new battery innovations into competitive product features.

Requirements

  • Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience in battery technology development for medical devices, consumer electronics, wearables, automotive, or high-tech sectors.
  • Proven track record of collaborating with suppliers to introduce new battery technologies into commercial products.
  • Solid knowledge of Battery Management Systems (BMS), battery modeling, charging strategies, and estimation algorithms like SoC and SoH.
  • Comprehensive understanding of electrochemistry, manufacturing processes, reliability, aging mechanisms, and verification methods.
  • Proficient Python programming skills for engineering automation and data analysis.
  • Experience using JMP, statistical analysis, and Design of Experiments (DoE).
  • Fluent spoken and written English.
