Eawag seeks a Research Assistant for a 3-year project on biodiversity-inspired lake modeling. The role involves field collection, lab culturing of phytoplankton, and high-content imaging analysis.
This position supports the Biodiversity & Ecosystem Functioning group in a three-year initiative focused on modeling lakes through the lens of biodiversity. The work connects biological processes across scales, from individual cells to entire ecosystems, requiring both field and laboratory expertise.
Responsibilities
- Conduct fieldwork to gather wild phytoplankton isolates.
- Manage laboratory culturing procedures and refine associated workflows.
- Execute highly replicated, controlled experiments using established protocols for wild isolates.
- Assist in creating and validating new laboratory assays.
- Perform high-content imaging using light, fluorescence, and confocal microscopy, alongside automated image analysis.
Requirements
- Hold a BSc or MSc in biology or a related discipline, or have completed lab technician training.
- Demonstrate strong proficiency in handling phytoplankton or other microbial cultures.
- Show proven experience with sterile techniques.
- Possess basic molecular biology training and competence in standard methods.
- Understand cell biology, phytoplankton physiology, and general phytoplankton biology.
- Have prior experience conducting controlled laboratory experiments.
- Be organized, reliable, capable of clear documentation, and comfortable working in teams.
