Robotics Engineer Intern - SLAM

Flyability · Paudex

Internship at Flyability in Paudex, CH, focusing on SLAM research and implementation for autonomous drone localization on the Elios 3 platform.

This internship at Flyability centers on advancing autonomous drone capabilities by developing next-generation SLAM systems. The position aims to bridge cutting-edge research with practical deployment, specifically enabling robots to reliably localize themselves within previously visited environments through global relocalization techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Research, test, and apply advanced techniques for relocalizing into existing maps.
  • Explore visual, geometric, and learning-based place recognition methods, including probabilistic approaches like particle filters for robust global localization.
  • Create strategies to filter out incorrect localization candidates and enhance system resilience against perceptual aliasing and ambiguous settings.
  • Incorporate findings into the current SLAM framework and assess performance through simulation and real-world data.
  • Establish and measure key performance indicators, including localization precision, robustness, computational speed, and failure scenarios.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s program in Robotics, Computer Science, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Prior experience in robotics, SLAM, localization, computer vision, or similar areas.
  • Proficient in C++ and Python programming.
  • Understanding of state estimation, mapping, visual localization, place recognition, or probabilistic robotics.
  • Ability to read and implement concepts from scientific literature.
  • Hands-on approach with strong analytical skills and a curiosity for tackling open-ended research problems.
  • Motivated and eager to work in a real-world environment.
  • Fluent in English.

Nice to have

  • Experience with modern robotics and machine learning approaches.
  • Experience with robotics hardware.
  • French or other languages.
