Internship - Reinforcement Learning for Navigation

ANYbotics seeks an intern to advance quadruped robot navigation using reinforcement learning in Zurich. This six-month, paid, onsite role focuses on simulation and real-world robot testing.

The candidate will join the Advanced Technology team to bridge emerging research with practical robotics innovations. The primary objective is to enhance the mobility of ANYmal robots by applying reinforcement learning techniques within simulation and on physical hardware. This is a full-time, paid internship spanning six months.

Responsibilities

• Test and optimize current reinforcement learning policies for navigation and locomotion in both simulated and physical quadruped environments.
• Collaborate with engineering and research staff on active software projects, covering layers from application-level code to autonomy and low-level control systems.
• Develop, implement, and validate new algorithms and features within the core software architecture.
• Enhance testing infrastructure, simulation setups, and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) workflows.
• Produce clean, efficient, and well-documented C++ and Python code designed for real-time execution on robotic hardware.

Requirements

• Current enrollment in a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD program in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a closely related technical discipline.
• Strong academic foundation and practical ability in mobile robotics domains, including Control Theory, Machine Learning, or Computer Vision.
• High proficiency in Python and/or C++, with a strong preference for Modern C++ standards.
• Familiarity with version control via Git, containerization using Docker, and AI-assisted coding tools.
• Fluent English communication skills suitable for a professional technical environment.
• A proactive, hands-on, and analytical approach to solving complex engineering challenges.

Nice to have

• Experience training AI models on GPUs, including familiarity with CUDA or other GPU-accelerated computing frameworks.
• Knowledge of Robotics Middleware, specifically ROS or ROS 2.
