Senior Investment Officer for Financial Institutions Debt Financing

responsAbility board seeks a Senior Investment Officer to lead debt financing activities for financial institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa, based in Cape Town.

This position is located in the company’s new Cape Town office and centers on managing debt fund operations across Sub-Saharan Africa. The role involves providing both senior and subordinated debt to financial institutions within the region.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the complete investment lifecycle, from sourcing opportunities and conducting due diligence to implementing portfolio decisions and ongoing monitoring.
  • Develop client relationships, identify new business prospects, execute transactions, and actively oversee the company’s debt investments in financial institutions across Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Conduct credit risk assessments for counterparties and evaluate associated market risks, including performing due diligence and scoring exercises.
  • Collaborate with internal risk management teams, investment committees, transaction specialists, and external partners to structure and finalize deals.
  • Represent the organization in a leadership capacity at industry conferences, seminars, and other relevant professional events.

Requirements

  • Hold a Master’s degree in economics, business administration, finance, or a closely related discipline.
  • Possess at least eight years of relevant experience within the financial sector, preferably in an international setting.
  • Demonstrate strong analytical and commercial capabilities, including the ability to produce credit write-ups and deliver effective presentations.
  • Exhibit excellent proficiency in both spoken and written English.
  • Show a flexible, self-reliant work style combined with strong intercultural communication skills.
  • Have the capacity to mentor and guide junior team members.
  • Be prepared for frequent travel throughout Sub-Saharan Africa as part of the role.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of regional financial markets, covering banking, small business and SME finance, as well as leasing and consumer or unsecured lending.

Nice to have

  • Prior experience working as a credit analyst or in a similar capacity.
  • Proficiency in French or Arabic.
