responsAbility board seeks an Investment Officer for its Cape Town office to manage debt investments in Sub-Saharan African microfinance institutions.

Based in the new Cape Town office, this position centers on deploying senior and subordinated debt to microfinance institutions across Sub-Saharan Africa. The role involves overseeing the entire investment lifecycle, from sourcing opportunities to portfolio monitoring, while contributing to the firm's impact-driven mandate in emerging markets.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the development, management, and expansion of debt investments within the African financial sector.
  • Perform credit risk assessments and due diligence on counterparties, including market risk scoring.
  • Collaborate with internal risk management, investment committees, and transaction teams, as well as external partners, to structure deals.
  • Guide investments through all stages, including sourcing, implementation, portfolio management decisions, and ongoing monitoring.
  • Act as a representative for the organization at industry conferences, seminars, and relevant professional events.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in economics, business administration, finance, or a closely related discipline.
  • At least five years of professional experience in the financial sector, preferably within an international context.
  • Solid understanding of microfinance, small and medium enterprise (SME) financing, and leasing operations.
  • Fluent command of written and spoken English.
  • Proven ability in analytical thinking, report writing, and delivering presentations.
  • Demonstrated commercial acumen and a strong drive for business development.
  • Adaptable, independent professional with strong intercultural communication abilities.
  • Willingness and ability to travel frequently throughout Africa.

Nice to have

  • Postgraduate degree from an accredited university.
  • Prior experience working as a credit analyst or in a similar analytical role.
  • Proficiency in French or Arabic.
