Senior Opto-Mechanical Engineer

Liom seeks a Senior Opto-Mechanical Engineer in Pfäffikon to lead the industrialization of non-invasive glucose monitoring wearables, bridging optics, mechanics, and manufacturing.

This position serves as a hands-on technical leadership role situated at the convergence of optics, mechanical engineering, manufacturing, and supplier development. The primary objective is to translate advanced optical sensing technology into robust, manufacturable products, ensuring seamless transition from concept to production.

Responsibilities

  • Spearhead the creation of opto-mechanical architectures and packaging solutions.
  • Refine mechanical designs, engineering documentation, and tolerancing methodologies.
  • Guide external development and manufacturing partners with technical oversight.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to mature designs and drive industrialization efforts.
  • Direct activities related to Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), and production readiness.
  • Execute the full prototype lifecycle, including design, construction, testing, troubleshooting, and optimization.
  • Assist in supplier selection, technical reviews, prototyping, and manufacturing transfer processes.

Requirements

  • MSc degree or equivalent industry experience in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of eight years of experience in developing precision mechanical or opto-mechanical products.
  • Demonstrated success in leading the development and industrialization of miniature optical, opto-electronic, or precision-engineered assemblies.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of optical mounting, alignment strategies, packaging, tolerancing, and assembly processes.
  • Strong grasp of DFM, DFA, and manufacturing processes for precision optical and electromechanical assemblies.
  • Proven ability to lead technical development activities with external engineering, manufacturing, or industrialization partners.
  • Hands-on engineering mindset with a willingness to personally design, prototype, assemble, and debug hardware.
  • Fluent proficiency in English.

Nice to have

  • Background in consumer electronics, wearable devices, or medical devices.
  • Experience with micro-optics, photonics packaging, spectroscopy systems, or optical sensors.
  • Familiarity with injection moulding, precision machining, optics manufacturing, and high-volume manufacturing processes.
  • Experience working with highly integrated optical and electronic assemblies.
